Arthritis and Joints

Arthritis is a condition in which the joints become inflamed. Due to the loss of collagen and cartilage, 80 percent of people over the age of 50 will experience joint pain. As a result, the joints are more likely to get inflamed, which can develop to arthritis. Osteoarthritis is the most prevalent type of arthritis, and it usually develops with age as joints deteriorate. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune illness that damages the joints and causes systemic inflammation in the immune system. Many lifestyle and dietary decisions might increase the risk of joint issues including arthritis. There is evidence that being overweight and a smoker increases the risk of developing osteoarthritis. 15-30 minutes of exercise per day will boost bone strength.

Allergies can trigger an inflammatory reaction in the body, so if you're allergic to something, your body may respond with inflammation, including joint inflammation. Try to identify and eliminate any food intolerances or allergies from your diet to see if this has an impact on the severity of your joint pain and other inflammation. Inflammation is also exacerbated by poor posture and excess weight.

There are supplements and dietary adjustments that can help with arthritic discomfort. Glucosamine is a necessary component for the body to produce glycosaminoglycans, which are found in cartilage. Absorption, distribution, and elimination of orally administered glucosamine sulphate have been found in studies to be as high as 98 percent. Arthritis patients have lower sulphur levels in their tissues. If you look at it this way, glucosamine is like the wood in our body, and sulphur is the nails that hold it all together. It may take up to 12 weeks for glucosamine supplementation to provide symptomatic relief; nevertheless, glucosamine gets to the root of the problem and aids in joint restoration. This can be just as effective as pain killers, but without the side effects.

Turmeric is a plant that has been used for years in countries such as India as a natural medical remedy to health problems, including arthritis. It contains curcumin as its active compound which is scientifically proven to aid health problems such as arthritis due to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compounds. It works as well as anti-inflammatory drugs without the side effects. However, the curcumin compounds found in turmeric are difficult for the body to absorb as it is a fat soluble compound, and therefore can't be absorbed into the aqueous intestine meaning it has low bioavailability. This means that with turmeric supplementation, 90% of the curcumin compound is excreted. Dr Wolz Curcumin has been carefully scientifically designed to have 40 times the amount of bioavailability as turmeric. This was done by embedding the lipophilic curcumin molecules in a hydrophilic exterior where it can travel to and be absorbed in to the intestine and be broken down, allowing it's benefits to be reaped.

Quercetin is a potent anti-inflammatory that helps maintain health joint tissue by stabilising collagen. It does this by inhibiting hyaluronidase which is the enzyme that breaks down the collagen matrix. Quercetin also reduces leukotrienes which cause vasoconstriction which inevitably lead to vascular permeability and broncho-constriction. This, in turn, reduces inflammation.

There's some basic nutrients that we can get from our diet and lifestyle that can also help with our joint and bone strength. Vitamin D, which we usually get from sunlight, helps with the absorption of calcium which is necessary for healthy, strong teeth and bones. We generally don't get enough vitamin D as it's difficult to obtain through diet and we have little access to sunlight in milder countries, so a good supplementation of vitamin D is necessary. Omega 3 counteracts the inflammatory chemicals in the body. A trial showed that supplementation of omega 3 for 3-4 months reduces joint pain intensity and morning stiffness. We can get omega 3 from oily fish such as salmon, mackerel and sardines as well as from omega-3-rich seeds such as chia seeds and flaxseeds.
