“A Bolt from the Blue”
Those of us who did chemistry at school will surely remember the ever-present bottles of methylene blue with its dark blue, ink like appearance, as it was used in many reactions, tests and as a stain for various materials. What many of us may not realise is that it was the first man made/synthetic pharmaceutical. It was first produced, as a dye, by a German chemist in 1876 and soon found a place as a commonly used medicine. It was used to treat a blood condition called methemoglobinaemia, but it soon became a treatment for malaria, infection of the urinary tract, cyanide poisoning, carbon monoxide poisoning, septic shock, neurodegenerative disorders and psychiatric problems such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
The historic uses of methylene blue led to the development of other well-known currently used anti-malarials and anti-depressants.
Modern research on methylene blue has concentrated on the fact that it appears to enhance mitochondrial function. Dysfunction of the mitochondria is thought to play a role in many
degenerative and age-related disorders as mitochondria are found in all our cells where they convert glucose and oxygen into energy.
Mitochondrial dysfunction is thought to play a major role in brain degeneration and age-related cognitive decline. This makes it potentially useful in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease.
On top of this is the fact that methylene blue is also showing promise in the treatment of ischaemic brain injury (stroke), traumatic brain injury and other degenerative brain disorders such as Parkinson’s disease. The main action underpinning this effect is the enhancement of the mitochondria with improved energy use leading to improved blood flow and enhanced healing and repair. Added to this, it has been shown that methylene blue acts to enhance levels of the vital brain chemicals dopamine and serotonin, thus elevating mood and sense of wellbeing.
As a powerful antioxidant and energy production enhancer methylene blue can fight against age related changes wherever they are in the body, making us look younger and stay healthy
longer.
Recently the antimicrobial effect of methylene blue has been highlighted as it may be beneficial in the fight against covid 19…as well as other bacterial and viral infections
Do not use methylene blue if you are taking antidepressant medication. If you take methylene blue you may find it stains your tongue and can cause discolouration of urine and faeces.
